Visit this May half term to discover flavours of the past

Sweet or savoury? Sugar or spice? What’s your flavour?  Take a trip down memory lane and reminisce about sweet treats and flavours from times gone by.

Meet our new historic characters, the Singhs or the Jamaican moms, as they try to source the rare ingredients for their tasty spiced recipes. Chat about the world spice trade and what was newly in demand in the Black Country in the 1950s.

Greet the ice cream seller who is out and about on his 1950s trike. Discover how he kept the ice frozen with no electric and find out what a ‘penny lick’ was. Take part in our family-friendly crafts where you can learn how to transform a piece of paper into a delicious looking ice cream of your own.

Discover the popular sweets in the Black Country as you explore the history of sweets, learn about the boom of the sugar industry, the impact of rationing, and how the flavours we know and love today arrived in Britain. Pop into our sweet shop and hear all about the making of sweets and don’t forget to do the all-important taste test by buying a traditional paper bag or two of your favourite handmade sweets.

Mind those teeth though as there are no dentists about! Pop into our Edwardian chemist to find out the terrible tales of teeth and what alternative they would have prescribed as toothpaste. Learn about the medicinal properties of herbs and spices, grown and cut from our very own gardens.

Not forgetting… all your usual favourite things that make up a fantastic family day out at the Museum: take part in traditional street games, take a trip down ‘into the thick’ with the Museum’s famous coal mine experience, ride on a vintage bus, catch a short film in the Lime Light Cinema, test your times tables in the Victorian School, and even grab a bag of our famously bostin fish & chips!

What’s more all of this is included in our general admission and UnChained Annual Pass offer; pay for one day and get 12months free return visits*.
