Bring 250 years of history to life with an immersive and curriculum-linked learning experience at our open-air living museum. 

Connect their studies to real history with a bespoke self-led educational visit.

Each Early Years visit will include:

    • A guided tour (price per student)
    • Hands on activities (price per group)
    • Teachers’ notes for the day
    • Downloadable resources (pre and post visit)
    • A choice of additional activities (*subject to availability)

Price: 

Tour for age 3 to 5 years £8.00 (+ VAT) per student 
Hands on activities £32.00 (+ VAT) per group of 30 max
Supervising adults (1 free per 8 students) £15.00 (+ VAT) per additional adult

 

How to book

Please note the above prices are compulsory for each Early Years visit. The Underground Mine Tour and Edwardian School lesson are not included for Early Years visits.

These education prices are for visits from October 2025 to August 2026. Prices for after this period are subject to change.

Activities during your visit

  1. Early Years School Children enjoy playing with shops in a 1940s Co-op

    Miniature Co-Op Store

    Duration: 1 hour
    Number of Children: 30


    Your children will role play as shop keepers and shoppers within our miniature co-op store. They will be tasked with assisting customers, collecting items on a shopping list, and ‘paying’ for their shopping. The children also visit our Cast Iron House with a delivery box to explore how food is stored and what food we can grow in our gardens.

    People Who Help Us – Theme

    Explore our Museum finding the people and characters who each help us in our day to day lives. From shop keepers to postal workers and nurses to librarians your children will experience a wide range of helpful characters who can still help us today.

  2. Early Years Children enjoying the 1950s sorting office for post

    Sorting Office Experience

    Duration: 1 hour
    Number of Children: 30


    Your children will explore post in our specially created sorting office, sorting envelopes by colour, letter or place; weighing parcels and writing a postcard home. Your children will also explore our High Street delivering letters and hearing from the people they meet.

  3. Illustration of Woodside Library

    Storytelling in Woodside Library

    Duration: 1 hour

    Number of Children: 30

    Your children are invited to settle down in our historic Woodside Library for a lively and interactive storytelling session led by our librarian. Children will then take part in hands-on activities linked to the story, including pegging fabric on a washing line, sequencing illustrations and creating their own story using puppets, all while having the opportunity to browse the library shelves.

    Traditional Tales – Theme

    Explore our Museum as your children listen to traditional tales and rhymes linked to buildings and locations across the site. From The Three Billy Goats Gruff on the canal bridge to The Three Little Pigs at the Brickworks, children will experience a wide range of familiar stories and rhymes that bring traditional tales to life.
